What was life like before opening your store or what were you doing prior?

Prior to opening the shop, I was in the fitness industry, doing personal training and teaching fitness classes. I was also working towards my Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance Management at Northeastern University. When I eventually graduated from the university, I had two small, beautiful children in my life, and I thought I was ready for my next adventure and new project, the shop.

Where did your passion for your business start?

It all started at a local farmers market about 6 years ago. I took a little break from teaching fitness by the end of my first pregnancy. That was when I found myself hand making greeting cards. I eventually started selling my stationery at the farmers market, where I met a lot of local makers and artisans and realized the power of small batch handcrafted products. A few years later, I opened Gift and Box Nantucket with a goal to feature these makers and artisans and curate gift boxes for different occasions showcasing their products.

What do you wish someone would’ve told you before you started your business?

Having a business requires a lot of dedication, work and ongoing investment in self-education. I knew that owning a business would not be easy, but I wish someone really told me about the sacrifices I would have to make!

What is the biggest accomplishment in your business that you are most proud of?

I am proud of a lot of accomplishments and achievements in my business. If I had to highlight two, I would say that supporting over 100 small makers, local and global, makes me happy. Also, I am very proud of the charity part that we have recently added to our mission. Giving back and helping out our local community is definitely a big accomplishment for us.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your business?

No matter what decision, big or small, you have to make in your business, always make sure you think through it carefully and envision how this decision will affect your business in the near future as well as in the long run. 

What are some of the most important qualities you look for when hiring employees (if applicable)?

Definitely a kind heart and willingness to learn every day.

What is your number one tip or piece of advice for other retailers?

Find your tribe, join it and follow it with all your heart. Surround yourself with like-minded people.

How has The Complete Boutique membership helped you succeed?

It has been giving me so much clarity and lots of insights into the details of my business. It has been teaching me how to rely on systems in my business and how to organize my time in business as well as outside of my shop.
